Advancing the art of basket making in our global community

The Southwestern Ontario Basketry Guild was formed in April 2003 at the Southwestern Ontario Basketry Conference held in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada. The guild is committed to spreading the art of basketry throughout Ontario and beyond through our educational program, visiting experts in basketry and providing basketry conferences. Members will have an opportunity to teach and/or study in a variety of artistic and educational settings. Monthly meetings include a short business meeting and a program of interest to members and/or a basketweaving session. Guild members are from across southern Ontario and USA.

The Southwestern Ontario Basketry Guild hosts weekend basket making retreats for its members at various locations. With comfortable accommodations and country cooking provided, members have time to weave and bead to their hearts’ content. Teacher selection is from the guild and the greater basketry community.

Members’ skills range across a wide spectrum of techniques and materials including basketweaving with reed, wire, waxed linen, silk fusion, willow and other natural materials. There are beaders and gourd artists among us, some of us are beginners, some of us are teachers, but all of us enjoy the fellowship and sharing of knowledge that is a part of the life of a guild.
